Re: Colorado high country early rifle hunt
Sheephunter, thank you very much for your encouragement. The bucks I've seen while hunting in unit 5 did tend to be narrow, but quite heavy and tall. I'm not after a book buck, just a great experience, and the chance at a good representative mountian buck.

Re: Elk 2nd rifle unit 24 CO
I haven't hunted 24, but have hunted the Pagota peak area of unit 12. This is just north of 24. Lots of elk, but a fair number of hunters. After the first season the elk seem to really pocket up in the remote dark timber or head for private ground.

Re: Colorado high country early rifle hunt
Thanks Silvertip. I'll do that. Its hard to believe nobody on this forum has hunted deer in this area. I've seen some pretty good bucks while hunting elk in unit 5, later in the season. I've always assumed that they probably came out of Zirkel. Maybe its just a crummy area.

Re: MuleyMadness Roll Call
Hey, I'm 35 years old. I'm married, with 2 really cool kids. I was born and raised on a Pennsylvania dairy farm. The farm is no longer in operation, but my wife and I, now own the property, and have built our home here. I'm self employed, and will hunt anything that moves. I'm a bowhunter, but not ab...

Colorado high country early rifle hunt
I'm thinking about applying for an "early high country" buck tag for units 14 or 161 in the Mt Zirkel Wilderness. Does anyone have experience hunting deer in this area. I've hunted elk many times in units 5 and 14, but never got into the wilderness area. This hunt usually starts the end of Aug. so I...
