I just found this 3 point shed the other day while I was out setting some trail cams.

I'm a rookie when it comes to shed hunting , but I'm really going to start getting into it.
A couple questions I have for the experienced shed hunters, Is there any way to tell how long a shead has been laying there? By color or cracks?Any advise would be great.

This shed has been weatherd white and a couple small micro cracks on the side that was faceing up but is brown on the under side

If its brown on the other side it was most likely dropped the year before. If a horn is still hard and smooth like a fresh brown then it was most likey dropped the year before, but if it is chalky and has a lot of cracks then it has been there for a while.

Pretty lucky score to find an old one. Most of the time, little animals get a hold of these and eat them up.

That looks to be at least a couple of years old. So, its a pretty good find. People missed it more than once. :thumb

What color is the other side? Been there at least a year, but doesn't look to old from your picture. Nice find.

I know does anyone else have that problem with the varmits eaten horns. I know good spots out on the pauns but I think the varmits get a hold of them real fast.

Antler is in good shape, bleached, brown still underside. 1 year old shed.
When deer shed in areas with lots of cover, antlers are chewed up almost right away.
Especially the tree rats, [squirrels]

On one of the points it looks like a mouse or two were nibbleing on it a little.
