I am pretty sure that the velvet is shed like a bull and turns white in time just like a bull's antlers.

Caribou are caribou, the cow caribou shed their velvet just like the bulls will. They may hold their velvet longer due to less horn, similiar to a spike elk. The color of the horns has more to do with what they are rubbing them on. You look at the woodland caribou versus a bull from Adak island Alaska , considerable difference in the color of the antlers. There is not 1 tree on Adak so they spend alot of time rubbing antlers against tall grass and rocks, maybe even against another caribou's antlers. The caribou in heavy timbered areas tend to have that awesome dark antler appearence. My bull I took in 2003 on Adak island had lighter antlers, my buddies bull from the mainland of AK had darker horns.
