Monster Shiras
Monster Shiras
This morning I went for a morning hunt with my good friend who had drawn a Nothern Utah Shiras Moose tag. We were there only a few moments when we started spotting Moose. We saw a bull that was probably around 38-40 inches which, because this was Justin first day hunting Moose he passed. We saw a couple cows and around 9:00 a.m. we spotted this beast. He was around a mile away and 500-600 feet down so we started to cut the distance. We got to a range directly north of the bull and found a spot that seemed like our best option at 361 yards.
Justin took aim and put several rounds into the boiler room on this bull. But what amazes me about Moose is how tough they are. His 7mm didn't even make this thing flintch. Justin looked at me and asked if he hit him and I said, "I don't know?" The bull never flitched, just got up and started walking. Then i saw blood all over in the snow and we were excited. This thing sat there and didn't expire for another 15 mintues. Tough animals!!!!
We haven't had a chance to score him, but we're guessing he's Boone and Crocket. Justin quickly measured his width and he was well over 50". The World Record Shiras was 53". I'll find out measurements and scores and post that, as well as better photos. here is what we have but it's just a cell phone picture.
Way to go Justin, Moose slayer!

Dang, I cant wait til I draw that tag! Great bull!
Re: Monster Shiras
Here are some better photos of the beast. Two days later and my legs still ache! Before he took the bull to the taxidermist he measured it's widest spread and came up with 52 5/8". Awesome!
