I read that when Warner Glenn treed his first Jaguar, it would have been perfectly legal to shoot it. At that time they had never been put on the endangered list in the states. I also believe he was instrumental in getting them put on the list in either 1998 or 1999.

I found this quote on the Arizona Wildlife Federation website:
The jaguar was put on the protected species list in 1968, and Arizona was included in the area in which jaguars are protected under the Endangered Species Act in 1997.

Thanks for the additional info Stickflicker! Let's hope they continue to survive down there....too beautiful an animal to not have around in my opinion.
