first geese of the new year

Post by Mark » Fri Jan 02, 2009 9:45 pm

Set up in a new field on New Years day and 15 minutes after shooting time 4 speckled bellied geese came in. When they were at 15 yards with their feet down I called the shot. I shot first and crumpled the lead bird, my son shot second and dropped the second bird, his buddy shot next and missed and his gun jammed. I shot again and dropped the 3rd bird. Josh emptied his gun on the last bird missing twice so I swung and dropped the 4th bird. That was it for me. An hour of drive time, an hour to set up and it was all over for me within 20 seconds! Not that I'm complaining, but it was a little bittersweet.

I spent the rest of the day with my son Josh and our friend Chad while they took turns missing honkers. Rough day for the youngsters! They couldn't kill a goose to save their butts! Josh doubled on mallards, the only two ducks that were in range. Josh finally connected on a nice Canada goose just before sunset. Not a bad way to spend New Years day.

Very nice start to the new year. Started mine off by shooting a single duck on new years day, but man it sure was a pretty redhead.

Looks like your hunting around Yerington or Fallon but either way great job not many specs come through there.

Nope. Less than 30 minutes from Reno on some private land.

A month from now? Our season closes next Sunday. I'm really trying to get myself a spot for both days next weekend!
