spotting scope

Post by gizmo1 » Thu Nov 17, 2011 4:48 pm

what is a good INEXPENSIVE spotting scope. i bought a bushnell 10 power scope but its about a use full as a poopy flavored lolly pop. i cant afford to spend a fortune. its not powerful enough for one but it was cheap. get what you pay for i guess.

How much you willing to spend? Lot's of good choices out there..

It took me awhile, but I saved up and got a swarovski. Well worth the wait is all I can say.

$200 is going to be very limiting. If you could double that to 4-5 then I think you could find some glass that would be perform well enough. The other option would be to look for something used on line.

The Vortex Nomad is about as low end as I would consider. It's ~$350 on Cabela's right now. Vortex also has a great unconditional lifetime warranty that a lot of guys really speak highly of.
I bought me a cheap spotter a couple years ago... 25-75x75 Trekker ($100 but I paid $50 from Cabela's). Don't get me wrong, I've had a lot of fun with it but it's very limited. At midday I can use the full range of power, but dawn and dusk I must use the lowest power setting. I watched a really nice muley buck from ~2000 yards and the image went dark in my scope 35 minutes before my friends Bausch & Lomb. It was pretty shocking to realize how inferior the quality was in my scope. I wish I would have saved a little bit and bought something that I could be more confident in. Save the $200 and wait, you'll just end up where I am... trying to convince the wife you want to buy a nicer, more expensive scope even though in her eyes you already have one.

I agree with what's been said.... just save up for a while more and get something that you know is going to be better quality. It's tough to wait on certain things, but this will be worth it for sure. I've learned one thing lately- don't skimp on glass. Quality optics will be such a great tool to have, whereas cheap optics can almost hinder a hunt. My crummy tasco bino's were fine in the summer and gave a pretty decent picture, but during my elk hunt (when it really mattered), they would fog after only a few seconds of being next to my eyes. Low light conditions were horrible and when I would try to get a better look at what I knew was a good bull, I'd look through them and couldn't count points at all. You'll be glad that you saved up. Also, I wouldn't be afraid of the used route... especially if you go the Vortex route. Lifetime warranty and all you have to have is the piece of equipment--no receipts or anything.
