Kodiak Island Sitka Blacktail hunt

Post by MULIES4EVER » Mon Dec 03, 2007 11:25 pm

I recently came home from a Kodiak Island hunt. It was incredible. My wife and I celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary up there. The deer numbers were a little low and the hunting was hard. Last winter took its toll on the deer there. However the bag limit is still 3 deer per hunter. My wife didnt want to hunt. She loves photography and enjoyed taking pictures. I managed to take two sitka bucks and found a monster rack that is shown in my avatar. I believe it was a bear kill.
Kodiak Island is 3000 square miles with 1 bear per square mile. We saw more bears than deer. Luckily only from a distance.

This buck was my first buck. the smaller one was my second. I called him in.
This buck was basking in the sun. The weather started great and got progressively worse. I shot the smaller buck because time was running out and I was eager to get my second tag filled. His body was rather large for a young Sitka.

Here is a cool shot of the sporting goods store back in town. They had a sign that that said, "YES, WE HUNT!"

The sitka doesnt get near as big as Mule deer but the meat is tasty. They are real neat looking with their double throat patch.

MULIES4EVER, Great pics and it looks like a great hunt too! CONGRATS!

My mother lives in Anchorage and I plan on using that as an excuse to get up there and hunt them Sitka blacktails one of these days myself.

Looks like you had a good time. Maybe I'll have to make it Kodiak and try to get a blacktail. Nice pics.
