Montana Opener this Weekend
Montana's big game rifle season opens this weekend.
I can't wait to climb a mountain pre-dawn tomorrow in pursuit of sub alpine muleys.
Good luck everyone - post photos when you get one!

What part of Montana do you hunt? The Bob? Glacier?

Depends on the weekend. I have a few favorite spots across the western part of the state...
I'm based in Missoula.

Re: Montana Opener this Weekend
Nice work. We're hopin' to drop a bull that my buddy has been watching for about 2 weeks now. He's guesstimating him around 350 so we're hoping to get into range. Of course, for us, 500 yards is in range haha.halibutaddict wrote:that back country season opened sept 15 th for rifle......we took my buddys daughter out for the youth opener yesterday, dropped a nice antelope buck at 400 yards and a nice wt buck right before dark, heck of an opener

Re: Montana Opener this Weekend
I can't even BEGIN to explain how irate I am right now. This was the first time in 10 years that I have quit hunting for a day due to what happened this morning on the opener...
Ten minutes to 6, I'm out of the truck, walking up to the spot we scouted last night. We can hear animals moving around, but not sure what it was since it was still pitch black. After about an hour of not moving, the sun started coming up and we realized we were less than 100 yards from a herd of about 40-50 elk, with 4 bulls in the bunch. Out of the 4, one was definitely a shooter. We sit tight another 20 or so minutes for the shooting light to appear, and I set my crosshairs on the big bull. As I'm squeezing the trigger, we hear someone literally yell at the top of their lungs. The bull spins around and he's gone.
The biggest spin to this story, is that we were on private land with the owner, and were the only ones granted permission. We caught up to the truck and turned them in, but I have never been so angry in my life. Had the owner not been there himself, they might have a dead (EDITED by Mod) up in the hills right now. I can't believe someone could be such a (EDITED by Mod)and ruin another hunter's opportunity. It was easily the biggest bull I would have shot at. I know there's 10x more responsible out of state hunters, but this guy ruined how I feel about them for the rest of my life. He will be arrested for trespassing and yadda yadda, but it's just sickening.
