Cactus Buck

Post by MuleyMadness » Tue Jun 24, 2014 9:26 am

Couple of pics of a cool cactus buck I was able to photograph a couple of weeks ago here in So. Utah, when I first saw him I thought I had found a giant with such tall growth already. Quickly realized he wasn't normal. lol

Here is the crazy part of this story, look at what this buck was last year.

A beautiful 4x5 with a hook cheater on his back right that isn't seen in this photo. He was really cool last year with potential to turn into a real giant. Don't think he is very old either. Such a bummer, I'm still in shock it's him and what happened to him this year. Crazy stuff I tell ya, I think he must have lost his 'male parts' jumping a fence last summer??

It will be interesting to see what he turns into.

looks like something happened right after the picture was taken last year. Which caused him to not loose his velvet and then break off some of his antlers/tines, before re-growing them this year.
There's always next year

Yeah, that's weird......cool photo though to document him and his progress. It will be interesting to see what he's going to grow into.

Cool pic Brett. That is way interesting. I agree that he probably lost some running gear.

2 different sets of horn there. EHD has and does attack the testicles in Mule deer. Kills Whitetails, but for some reason Mule deer end up alive and look like this. There is a study going on now to see if they stay this way or eventually change and if they stay sterile.

Yea meaning 3/4 old horn growth from last year (never shed) but certainly lost some chunks of antler and is know growing some new stuff back this year. From my experience watching these type of bucks and trust me I've watched several just like him over several years consecutive. They absolutely STAY like this and I would assume stay sterile also. But I've never seen one end up like this and then go back to normal.
