Help on the Vernon

Post by Jadetk » Thu Jul 17, 2014 7:34 pm

Hello my name is Jade I finally drew the West Desert Vernon muzzy tag after 9 years. I have been out every weekend and have learned the unit fairly well. I've been to the front and back of Sheep all the way to Maple. I know all the boarders of the private land and know most canyons. Next I'm going to learn the Simpsons this weekend and next. If anyone has any info from past hunts, or just knows the area and where the deer are I'd really appreciate it. Thank you

Why don't you stick around a while and post up some pictures of your scouting trips?

I don't really know what you want me to say. I've been out to the Simpsons and am heading out this weekend to see where the fires burned. If anyone has questions I'd be more than happy to answer I was just hoping someone would help me out a little.

Jade, you may be trying to see too many canyons. Are you seeing any big bucks?
How big are the top three bucks you have seen so far?

Honestly I just wanted to learn the area really well now I've numbered it down to ten areas through sheep and the Simpsons that I want to start looking for deer, I'm going to start around Dutch in the morning. I've only found a couple 22" to 24" bucks but I haven't scouted the areas I want to get into yet either.

Get up high on the ridges and then look about mid-canyon in the bottoms of the canyons and draws. that's where you will see a fair amount of the bigger bucks.
I really do hope you share your experience out there with us and wish you the best of luck.

We're seeing a lot of taller bucks without a lot of width. Saw a couple pretty good Bach groups with some shooters. Still looking for a wider buck but have seen a couple 26" bucks that would be really tuff to pass. They have some odd genetics out there, a lot of 3x4s.
