2014 early Kaibab hunt

Post by tythur111386 » Sat Jul 26, 2014 9:19 am

So after 5 years I finally got drawn for Kaibab. I was really hoping to get the late hunt but I got my second choice the october24-November 2 late rifle tag in 12a west. Last year I went up for the October Turkey tag and hunted around the Kaibab lodge on hwy 67. I was amazed at how many deer there were, I mean we were seeing over 200 a day. I only found 4 nice bucks on my weekend trip and was wondering if these are shooters or if I can get bigger. I plan on getting up there at least three weekends before my hunt to scout different areas and then get there about 4 days early to get set up for opening day. My plea to you guys is to find out any pointers on different locations to maybe take a look at. I have only been up there once before and it is expensive to go so I want my scouting time to be as productive as possible. I know I will be very happy with my experience considering i only have ever hunted southern AZ Couse bucks and these Mulley’s are huge. Any advice is really appreciated thank you

P.S attached is some photos of the deer I found last year the one on the right I think would look very nice in my living room

Those bucks (pictured) are 2.5 to 3.5 year olds.....and not quite mature. They grow far bigger on the Bab' if given time to grow.

Cool pic, with a little work yea you can hopefully turn up one even bigger than those though. Never hunted the Kaibab, but it holds some DANDY bucks. Welcome and best of luck to you. Keep us posted.

The early hunt can be tough. You never know what to expect it could be 75 degrees or there could be 2' of snow. I would start high and work low when the hunt starts. I'm out there frequently during the summer and have seen good bucks in the Big Springs area and blow down. FR 22 and 462 are good access points to the west side. If I had the tag I'd probably be looking for 180" +.

Nice pics also.
