Idaho Rut

Post by 9er » Fri Nov 24, 2006 9:47 pm

made it out today to try and find some rutting bucks, every buck we saw was either by itself or other bucks, and all the does didnt have a buck with them. is the rut winding down or what? any ideas why this is?

thanks

Yes, I assume the major chunk of the rut is over. I had similar experience down here Monday night.

Did you take the camera, get any pics?

9er, the bucks around my neck of the woods (Northern Idaho) are still pushin' the does pretty hard. My brother and his son both filled thier tags with some bucks that were certainly still "doin' thier thing". Both bucks were pushin' does when they were harvested and had moss, bark, etc still stuck in thier burs and lower antlers when they were taken (Pictures are posted in the rifle forum).
In fact, it seems as if the rut was a week or two late this year. Once the snow started fallin' though it flipped that switch and they've been pushin' ever since.

When I was in Montana the week of November 15-22 they were rutting really strong, both Whitetails and Muleys.

I finally found time to get out yesterday and around here (So. Utah) the deer seem to still be rutting. I watched a nice 4x6 run off a smaller 4 point and I saw another nice buck with a broken antler chasing right behind a doe. My darn camera only zooms so far so I couldn't get any good pictures. Maybe next time.
