Velvet Removal Help

Post by hunterman6 » Mon Mar 02, 2009 1:39 am

Hey guys,
I am new, and this might be discussed elsewhere but I couldn't find it. So here goes... Can velvet be removed? Say at the beginning of September on Colorado bucks? If so, How do you do it? If it can, does it look good? Any info is appreciated.

It can be removed just by pulling it off if it's splitting already. If it's tight you may have to boil it to get it off. The antlers are pure white and the pearling will be sharp. I've got several sets and they look a little weird.

If you want you antlers to look more normal after you get the velvet off just sand them a little. After I get the tips rounded off the way that I want them I get some real fine grit sand paper and just gently rub the antlers and they will shine right up. A little WAM and and they will look like a regular set of antlers.

Up in Quebec, after we harvested our caribou, the giudes left our antlers in the lake to keep them wet. The day before we left they removed them and slit the velvet lengthwise with a knife. Then we used spoons going underneath the velvet and unwrapping so to speek around the circumference, the entire length of all the points and main beam.
Hope this helps.
