map and computer scouting

Post by BlackCoyote » Thu Oct 29, 2009 8:42 am

just a newbie looking for some tips and help...i seen some of the areas I want to hunt, but would like to expand out. Unfortunately a scouting trip is out of the question due to money.

Just a question to make sure I'm on the right track, what do you look for in the terrain when map scouting and computer scouting?

Thanks for any help, -Drew

I.M.O. looking for access to a specific area is most important. Whether on foot or vehicle you'll want a birds-eye view of where you'll be wanting to go, makes it easier to work the area too. Keep in mind the date of the photo's you're going to use, the area we hunt had sat photo's dating 2006 which did not show the burn areas from a recent fire. Also did not show all the access roads, showed alot but not all of them. Travel maps from the local Ranger station help too, you don't want to be caught on a road that you shouldn't be on.
