SKILLS USA or VICA

Post by Mark » Fri Jun 29, 2007 8:34 pm

Is anyone here familiar with the Skills USA high school competitions?

My oldest son that just graduated from high school won the gold medal in architectural drafting for the State of Nevada last month. That gold medal earned him a trip to the Nationals in Kansas City which is where he is right now.

I just got "The Call" from my boy. He won the gold at the Nationals! I couldn't be more proud of my son right now. And I just needed to tell the world!

In a nutshell, Skills USA is a competition for various trades. They have kids that compete in welding, diesel mechanics, plumbing, cooking, computer graphics, mechanical drafting, architectural drafting, building trades, etc.

Last year my son was 4th in the state in carpentry. This year he took the CAD classes and it was a natural fit for him. He's been exposed to 3D CAD here at home as that's how I make my living (mechanical design/drafting).

He's planning to pursue a career in architecture. This will really open a lot of doors for him. First place at the Nationals got him a new laptop, $10k worth of 3D CAD software, and possibly some scholarship money.

He's been in Kansas City all week. He'll be home tomorrow and we can't wait to see him!
