WY Antelope - units 47 & 48

Post by Ready » Wed Dec 31, 2008 12:18 am

Has anyone hunted these units before. I have hunted elk near there in the past, but didn't pay much attention to the goats and it was over 10 years ago. I was just curious if anyone had been there recently and how their hunt went. I'm looking into taking my 13 year old son on his first speedgoat hunt there this fall, or maybe in 2010. Any info is appreciated!

A friend hunt's it every year, He's not a horn hunter so I cann't give ya much info on that other than the drought is not helping horn development. 47 has always held good #'s of Antelope.
I believe they have a good # of doe /fawn tags so be sure to get a couple of them too.
I know my spellings bad!

I have posted a similar question in the whitetail section (Wyoming?) and have got a few responses

I too am planning on WY (more than likely 47) for 2010 for pronghorns and whitetail deer in another part of the state

good luck

47 and 48 do have lots of antelope, and access is decent. There are not a lot of big-time trophies there, but it is a fun hunt. Licenses are pretty easy to come by and there are always does licenses available, too.

The winter of 2007-08 was really hard on the antelope there; many died. But they had a mild winter this year and should bounce back quickly.

I have hunted 47 for the past few years and we have had some good fortune for precip. The horn growth is a little better every year but if you want a good area with lots of public land and opportunities at antelope 47 is a good area. If you are patient enough you can find some pretty good trophys too.

I too have been looking all over for info on unit 48, but there doesn't seem to be much out there. Seems to be checkerboard land and alot of private, i will be going out in October to see what i can find. looks like the northern part of the unit has the best access, so i may head that direction. I was going with some friends (who knew the unit)for my first trip to Wyoming and they bailed on me and cant make it so it looks like i'm on my own. If i come up with any good info i will let you know.
Also looking for good places to camp, seems like Seminoe resevoir is about the only camping i have found.
