I would go with the .338 out of the 2 just for the knock down power, If for some reason you don't place the best shot and elk runs into the thickets you are going to have a long day/night. I personally shoot a .300 win mag for my elk rifle. I want to make sure they are knocked down if i happen to have a bad shot.
