Unit 51 New Mexico

Post by lineman21 » Wed Jun 09, 2010 5:43 pm

Looking for some help on a Unit 51 New Mexico DIY hunt. Never been there for starters but planning some scouting trip before season. Looking for some info so I have a place to start. I drew an archery tag for sept 1-15. I am assuming it will be hot and the bulls won't be to fired up yet. Any info would be appreciated. Not looking to steal any spots, just need a little help to start the process. thanks!

For the most part I can tell the differance... Spent the last few year on otc hunts in colorado so I know the difference between a bull and some yahoo whaling on his pack bugle.
I like to set up a wall tent camp and then go out for 2 days at a time usually. Everywhere I've hunted before it takes that long to get to the elk...!

If you go to canon plaza there is a good place to base camp on the west side of the vallecitos river right over the bridge. I would hunt northwest toward the Jaramilla Ranch. Felepito caynon,or the escondia. Stay on top or highas you can before daylight. The first two weeks of the season up there, if there gonna fire up it'll be between 3am and daylight. That'll give U a direction to head if your up that early and all the ya_hoos are passed out. Stay away from 15 springs its coverd up with wanta be's and camp crawlers. Don't mind the akazinal rifle shot all the local pochers take there meat that time of year. Be prepared for hale storms and stuff like that it moves in fast. I took a nice 6X6 up there with my bow in 2006 and 2007. they come in silent mosty often so watch your back trial. Good luck, lets us know how it goes. I'll be up there in DEC.
