What is the best way to hunt elk ? By walking in, off horse back, 4 wheeler ?
I would think that walking would be the best way. But it is hard to cover much ground that way. Does anyone use mules to hunt off of ?

Horse back is the best way, then walking.
Just say no to four wheelers except around the house. Can't use them anywhere's off road.
It ain't the size of the gun but the placement of the bullet.

We use horses to get into the area that we want to hunt them head out on foot. It opens up your options when you can move around to find the herds when you are way back in.

You know, I've always heard that horse back is the way to go. They say that even though the horse isn't silent, and they typically stink, an elk won't spook as easily. They're almost curious about the horses. Is it true, heck who knows, but I know lots of people that that's the only way they hunt. Not to mention it's a lot easier to pack out an animal after you've tagged out..............

I've only hunted elk on foot. Seems to me if your riding horse you got to pretty much stay on trails?? Or can you just take off across country? Elk are in some purty rough stuff.
Seems to me the big benefit with having mules or horses would be to get packed in then packed out.
That in itself would be
As for 4 wheelers,

Wayne, you raise a very good point. Hunting by foot would make my 1000 mile trip to get there a whole lot easier. That is something i need to give some very serious consideration.
Hunting off of mules would have its advantages and disadvantages for sure.

It depends on the area in which I am hunting. Whenever possible I use my horses to get me into the area for a sort of base camp set up. I then keep them in camp until I need to bring them in to get the elk. I tend not to hunt off of them.
