What about offset vanes?

Post by nuttinbutchunks » Sat Jan 12, 2008 10:26 pm

A guy from work gave me some Gold Tip 5575 shafts, and I noticed the vanes are offset. To what degree I'm not sure, but is there an advantage to this or does it increase wind drag? (???)

I was reading in an old issue of hunting illustrated that it helps the arrow fly straighter improving the accuracy. I thought it said that you loose a little bit of spee with it though but im not sure. ill have to reread the article

I'm certainly no expert, but I have been told that any shaft with a helical fletching versus straight will help stabilize arrow flight, especially with broadheads. I know that on both my compound and my recuve that it makes a big difference. My carbons on my compound are setup with 4" vanes set at a 4 degree right helical, and my recurve shoots XX78 aluminums with 5" feathers set at a 7 degree right helical, and both setups fly great. salxxute

Off-set vanes can increase the spin of your arrow. This can help you achieve some accuracy at closer ranges, but it can start to drag at the longer distances, it can also create more noise.

Yeah, I was concerned about speed at longer distances. I wonder if I should re-flech them?

Goldtip arrows come with an offset.

Would it be best to have any offset or just straight? What is the recommendation?

Helical fletching or offset don’t think it really matters. I would never put a fletching on straight for an arrow shooting a broadhead.

I personally prefer a helical.

Thanks for that insight. These WILL eventually have hunting tips on 'em. I guess as expensive as they are, I should have known they make them that way for a reason.
