I'm heading to Colorado this fall for a DIY muley hunt via backpack. I've just started doing my research and am interested in the South San Juan Wilderness, the West Elk Wilderness, and the Weminuche Wilderness. I've never shot a deer w/ my bow, so I'm not after big antlers, I just want to see lots of deer and have lots of opportunity. Is anyone on here familiar with these remote areas? I'm also interested in doing a combo hunt for elk as well, if the seasons over lap. Thanks for any advice.

The archery deer and elk seasons run at the same time to the day. If you plan on hunting the Weminuche prepare yourself like you would for a Mt. Goat hunt. The elevation runs 7,500 to 13,000. I haven't hunted the Weminuche but I have chased elk around Little Molas lake which is just west of there. Be prepared to climb some "hills".

mattys281, ::wel to Muley Madness!
That area you are looking at is some remote country. I haven't hunted that part of the state but know that it holds a lot of elk. Sneaky is right, some really rugged but beautiful country.

I started a pretty good work-out regime in Dec, after getting my butt kicked pretty hard on a backpacking hunt here in Az. Consists of jogging, sit-ups, push-ups, jogging, backpacking, hiking, jogging, etc. etc.
I really hate jogging, but don't have time to squeeze in a hike before work, so I jog a couple miles instead. I can't wait to go, Sept. can't get here soon enough. Just filled my javelina tag here in Az. yesterday. 8 yard shot! That's why people bowhunt, nothing like close range action!
Thanks for the advise.
