Shed Trip - 1st of 2010

Post by MuleyMadness » Tue Mar 09, 2010 10:15 am

Me and good friend Jared made it out for my 1st shed hunting trip of 2010. After the nearly 2 hour drive we were in our 'new' hunting grounds. (New area to both of us). The condition were wet, cold, wind, snow. The ground was the WETTEST I ever remember, each step felt like I was walking on sponges soaked with water...was pretty crazy but the moisture is going to do this area GOOD.

We cut some fresh tracks crossing the road and decided this is as good enough. 31,000 steps on the pedometer (about 12.9) miles later this was my result. I was WAY happy with the big 4 find and obviously not much else. But it was still fun to get out, even though I'm feeling the after effects of 7 hours of hiking right now. :)

Jared found a small 3-point and that was it. Conditions were a bit tough, not sure where the bucks are in this area? No fresh browns this time.

Hope you enjoy!

Some pics from the outing.

The big 4point side I figure it a 180 type class buck. Tall buck, good front forks and beam (biggest shed I've ever found).

Very nice MM.

Congrats on your find. I took my boy out last saturday and put in about 5 miles. No antlers found. We average 6 mile per antler so hopefully our next find is in the first mile of hiking. One of these times maybe we'll find a honey hole and drop our average to 100' per find [-o< .

Gotta love the excitement you experience when you spot a good antler. Making it even better, your hunt isn't over, there's no gut job to do, and the pack out is considerably lighter than packing out a buck. Best of luck to you in the coming months.

Sounds like a great day despite the nasty conditions. It is definatley rare for that southern Utah dirt to be that wet! Should grow some good spring treats for the bucks that make it through the winter!
congrats on getting out and finding some!

12.9 miles is what we walked yesterday? No wonder my knee and ankle are hurting.. haha You should post a pic of you holding the big 4. Thats an impressive antler and the ATL doesn't do it justice. Hopefully we can find a better spot nxt tim with more bone. But it was still better than a day at work!

I don't have a pic of me holding the big 4, but will have to get one I suppose.

Yes on the mileage, my left hip kills I can barely walk today. :)

Nice set of pics, good looking country.

I figured it out best I could. Last year both MN shed hunting and in the West it came to about 4 miles per shed. about 80 shed total in 09.
I use a pedometer to, makes it kind of interesting how much work we will do for bone. :-k
As you all know shed hunting is a lot like hunting. We do it for other reasons then to pile up sheds, it's the whole adventure.
I enjoy going to old spots and very much like to explore new ones.

I'm watching the snow depth maps in the West, planning on the first trip as soon as the weather is right.

I thought I was the only one who got sore shed hunting, lol. I just figured I was getting old but you guys make me feel a little better. Heshen, sorry that I could not go last week but Daisy unexpectedly came into heat and I've been trying to get her bred. Don't know if it happened but there was some promising evidence. I'll give you a call and reschedule. fatrooster.
