Let's Liven Things Up

Well, I figured since the season is getting close again, might as well begin to liven the forum up once again. So lets do a Favorite ATL's.

Nice. Looks like some weed control needs to be done in that area with that mullein.

Where that mulie is, it is so nasty, but that's what the deer and elk love, cause they get less pressure. It's tough but it pays off every now and then.

I'll bite, here is my best find from 2013. Matching set, closest together I've ever found them. And it doesn't happen hardly ever these days.

Here are a few of mine from 2013. I had a really fun year with 56 total trips, 289.35 total miles, 92 deer (31 brown, 61 white), 44 elk (17 brown, 27 white), for a total of 136 sheds (2 more than last year). 10 of these were sets, most of which were laying right next to each other. This doesn't count the 117 catch and release sheds I found and left in Yellowstone. I also found 8 dead heads (3 deer and 5 elk). A couple of my usual spots didn't produce, but I made up for it with some new spots that really paid off. I am filled with anticipation for 2014 and will take my first crack at archery hunting for elk.

Sactribe, how long have you been shed hunting? I mean I wish I could find that many in a year! That's amazing! I've only been shed hunting for 5 years. 2014 will be my 6th year and I'm looking to beat 61 sheds. 61 was from the actual shed hunting, and we found 3 out hunting. That was is the 2013 total, 31 elk sheds(14 old, 16 fresh), 30 deer sheds(27 old, 3 fresh). We didn't do to good on fresh deer sheds, but our numbers on deer aren't as strong as they were in the past. Anyways, I would like to know how how long you've been shed hunting. Your numbers are impressive!

Elkantleraddict, I didn't really get into shed hunting until I moved to Colorado about 7 years ago. I had found a few before then while hunting, but never really looked for them. Our first spring in Colorado a nice 4X4 buck dropped both antlers in our front yard and my son found them. We started looking around the area and found a few more. Then I started exploring other areas around here and would find a handful every year. It was while hunting in the fall of 2011 that I became obsessed with shed hunting after finding 4 or 5 elk sheds during hunting season. For the last two years I have been out every chance I get, while balancing a job and family and other responsibilities. I hit it hard in the spring and keep it up all year until winter when the snow gets to be too much. It is not just a spring thing for me. I am fortunate to have a lot of great public land and not a lot of competition.

Ah, there is a lot of competition where I'm at in New Mexico, but my dad and I found an area where few people get to, so that's where we found most of our sheds. Like I said hoping to beat 61 this year, and like our season is basically all year, but we stop when the hunts come due to it can be a little dangerous carrying sheds while there are firearms in the area, but can't wait for this season. Looking to have some great times.
