is utah worth it?

Post by killerbee » Sat Feb 07, 2009 5:50 pm

O.K. give it to me honestly.
i just checked my points, i have 4 NR bull elk points and 4 NR mt. goat points
originally when i started putting in i figured the goat i could draw in 8 yrs.
the elk i've always wanted to save up do a rifle rut hunt . but i'm thinking i'm WAY to far behind and will never get there.
should i cut my loses?
on the goat, what is it taking to draw a wasatch goat tag? maybe a nanny tag? or what would be the easieast tag to draw?
for the elk, what is it taking to draw some of the lesser units? can you draw ANY bull tag with 4or 5 points? would one of those be a better than average hunt for most states?

OR DID I JUST START TO LATE??

lets hear it

keep building them and keep applying for a tag every year till you draw.

I wondered the same thing for a few year there. I am a non-resident to Utah. My friend and I drew our elk tags on the wasatch with 8 points. The first year you have 0 points so it actually took nine years. We both got a great bull during the rut so it was worth it. My friend put his son in for the drawing along with his brother in law after we had tagged out and they both drew the same tag that took us 9 years with just two points. (luck of the draw). I drew an Ogden Bull moose tag with just four points, again, luck of the draw. You can't draw unless you apply.

I would have to agree with that statement.

thanks guys for the input. with the economy i dont know if i WANT to draw a tag this year. i've been real busy but if you look at the overall poualtion. there is alot of guys out of work. so what if i drew and ran out of work..... that would suck! i have a couple months ahead of work but there are more that are out of work than that are in my shoes. :>/ :>/
i'm thinkingi will just do a point this year. maybe...
lets talk about my other options. i originally said this was my big bull hunt period. no matter the yrs invested. now i'm thinking it will be 20 yrs befor i can pull a tag. what about a good bow hunt? or late rifle or muzzy? can any thing be draw anytime soon? maybe and just be hunting 320 bulls?
thanks for the input, and thanks for the p.ms. you guys are a great help :thumb

I know most of the Southern Utah elk units are fairly good on the bow hunt, Boulder, Dutton, Monroe. You could probably draw an archery Paunsagant bull tag with 4-5 points but finding anything over 330 would be difficult. The Duttan late rifle hunt is usually pretty good.

At least you wouldn't have to worry about taking time off work then would ya! lol There's enough of us here in Utah i'm sure you'd have a place to stay and even a buddy or two to go out with you. It's not a nice thought about being out of work, but if it happens then it's going to happen whether you have that tag in your pocket or not.
