- Description: I have wanted to hunt since I was seven when I shot a gun for the first time but have never had the chance because my dad is not a hunter. He is not against hunting, it's just not something that interests him. I have prayed a lot since then and finally got the chance this year when someone gave me a Benelli Nova 12 gauge with a 3.5 inch chamber. Then someone else who lives on 400 acres offered to let my hunt on their property which has tons of deer. The deer are small but there is a lot of them. I spent the night at their house and could not sleep because I was so excited! After getting up and having a bowl of oatmeal we got in their truck and went to the area that we were going to hunt. Their are is any deer so I could take a doe but I wanted a buck! We jumped a doe in the first minute of the hunt and soon jumped another one. We did'nt see anything for about an hour and then we split up to a few different areas. After walking a little ways I looked up and about 75 yards away was a nice 2 by 2 buck with deep forks. I slowly got into a good shooting position and waited until he got to about 30 yards, made sure it was safe, and shot.........and missed. I was pretty disappointed but continued to hunt. I soon heard 2 shots from the direction of my friend and went to see if he had gotten one. He was using buckshot and said he had hit a nice buck and it had not gone down so he shot it again and it ran off. We found hair and blood and tracked it for about two hours with the trail getting harder and harder to follow and just disapeared so we decided to let it sit for a while, get some friends and try to find it later. It was near lunch time so we decided to stop at their house to quickly grab some sandwiches and on the way back we saw about four deer (A little forked antler, two does, and a nice 3 by 2 buck) which they said was the biggest deer that they had seen in a few years) in a field that they had permission to hunt so I decided try to stalk it. There was no cover exept knee high grass and it was about 200 yards to the nice buck. I took it really slow and was finally in range when I saw him get up and start walking so I sat down, got a good rest across my knee and waited for the right angle and shot him through the spine with a 1 ounce slug. He went down pretty quick and I was pretty excited. We field dressed him and were able to pull the truck up to him and lift him in to bring to their house were we skinned it and had our long awaited lunch. He was about 80 pounds dressed and rough scored 100. Not real big but big for where we were hunting.
