Not much of a story, but here it is nonetheless. Friday, October 19th was a very rainy day. I went out with 4 of my buddies on some land that one of them got permission to hunt. I had to be back in town by 1:00 p.m. so I didn't have much time to hunt. We got where we needed to go plenty early and we decided to split up. Two of my buddies went down one ridge and two of my other buddies went down the road about a half mile to go in on another ridge. I went directly in the middle. I had about 30 minutes to kill before I started walking through the trees, so I decided to kick back and watch a few hunts from Lowland Mulies 3 in my truck. I had a DVD player with me...
As soon as it got light enough to see I started walking through the trees and brush. My buddy said that I would have to walk through the trees about 800 yards and then it would open up into rolling hills. Well, I hadn't got 100 yards into the trees when I heard two shot coming from the direction that two of my buddies had went in. So I hurried through the trees expecting to see something running through, but never did. I finally reached the edge of the trees where I could look out into the open hills. I had just walked through the last few trees when I looked up and saw a deer walking away from me at about 150 yards. It was raining and a little foggy so I couldn't tell how big he was, but I could tell he was a buck just by the way he was walking. I flipped my scope covers up and got on him. Now, I hadn't shot anything bigger than a forked horn for a few years because I was holding out for a decent buck. Well, when I saw his antlers through my scope my blood started pumping. So I pushed of the safety, steadied for a shot and let the lead fly. The first shot hit him! He started running up a little draw and I could tell he was hit. He disappeared from my sight so I ran over to the draw he went up. I came to a large rock and single pine tree on the edge of the draw. As I came to the draw I saw about 5 cows standing at the top of the draw about 80 yards away looking at something below them, so I knew he was there. Just then he came running out from behind some buck brush heading straight for me. So I kneeled down to get a good shot. He came to within about 20 yards but I couldn't get a good shot because the branches of the tree were in my way. So I squatted down below the branches and I got a shot through a narrow window between the tree and the rock and dropped him in his tracks.
So I walked up to him and was overwhelmed with excitement! He was a good buck! About 10 minutes later two of my buddies came walking up and told the story of them shooting at this buck but there scopes fogged up and they couldn't get a good shot. Unfortunately there was a bigger buck with this one that disappeared. Oh well, this buck will do! He was 23 inches wide, 20 inches tall, and scored 158 5/8 gross and 150 3/8 net. He is my best buck to date!
