.22 250 or .223??

Been hearing alot of debates on which rifle is better for coyotes. Wondering what you guys thought. Did some research and personally I don't see one really being better than the other. I think it boils down to personal preference.

First of all, Ghostdoghunter Welcome to Muley Madness! :>HI ::wel

.223's are a good yote wacker and the ammo is cheap. The 22-250 shoots a little hotter and hits harder. The difference comes in those 250+ yard shots, as the 22-250 will keep up the speed and knockdown power out to 400-500 yards. I have a bull barrel on my 22-250, so it doesn't over heat when shooting at whistle pigs. I like both 223 & 22-250. The .204 is a mighty fine round too. :2

Thanks Hiker.

I've always used a Marlin .22 semiauto. But I never really shot Coyotes except for when they came in the yard. But since I have lived in Colorado I have been taking it a little more serious especially since I have worked out some deals where I have ranchers who let me hunt there land if I shoot coyotes for them a couple days a week.

the 22-250 is great and FLAT shooting the 223 is also a decent round the biggest + for the 223 is all the cheap ammo available I personally love the 22-250 bit the 223 will also work well

i currently have a .223 and a .243, and will more than likely pick up a 22-250 some time in the future. ammo for both are really not to expensive especially compared the my 7mm rem mag shooting Federal Premium Barnes' out of it ($40 a box ). ](*,)

Both the .223 and 22-250 are good rounds, sighted in at 200 yds and shooting a 60 grain nosler partion the .223 is 8.0" low at 300 and the 22-250 is 6.2" low. although the 22-250 hits with 144 more lb ft of energy at that range. but at 500 yds they are only 79 lb ft apart. (according to federals ballistics)

It really is a matter of opion I think. I shoot a .22-250 and I really like it. 223 ammo is cheaper unless you reload, then it is about the same.

i would go .223. some of those guns you can get are so short, they are awsome

you have to watch out a lot of that cheap 223 ammo is so in-accurate its rediculous the 22-250 is the better of the by far but the "cheap" ammo is why the 223 is popular but ive had alot of run ins with crappy ammo

i always get me a cheap box of Federal from cabelas and i like its accuracy

thats an upgrade but alot of people get the army ammo or the big bulk ammo ant they usually arent very accurate

I can tell you the milspec .223 rounds are plenty accurate. I've sent quite a few of them down range and they always hit where you're aiming. Not sure about the bulk ammo that is out there though. .22-250 is one heck of a varmint round though. Would be tough to choose between the two unless I was looking at long range (250+ yards) shots. On long range, I'd take the .22-250 simply because most rifles in that caliber are made for long range shooting. Most .223's are not as the tend to have the shorter barrels. For the "fun" factor, can't beat the .223.

Alright boys, yet another thing I don't know anything about :) ... Anyone mind filling me in once again? I was always under the impression that the bigger the gun the more it is made for longer and stronger shots? And isn't the .223 one step up from the 22-250? If so, which I think it is, then that shoots my theory to crap, so ..... well shoot I lost myself, forgot what I was wanting to know now.... um, I guess just what does it mean if one gun is "bigger" than another? (bigger as in how the .223 is "bigger" than the 22-250)

never owned or shot either, so dont know a thing about them. closest thing is I have a .22 and a .243?

Probably confused all of you, haha, sorry bout that. I'm even confused and i'm the one writing.

actualy i believe the 223 is smaller that the 22-250.

in my opion i like the 223, you can get the shells for dirt cheap.

this is just my .02, i personaly chose the 223.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

As far as bullets go both calibers are the same size. You can shoot the exact same bullets out of both guns. The difference come in the case sizes. The 22-250 is a .243 necked down to a .22 caliber. Since the 22-250 has more powder behind the bullet it will push it out faster. I have a .222 Rem. Mag. which is just a hair bigger than the .223 but basicly the same thing. While I load around thirty two grains of powder behind a fifty two grain bullet to achieve about 3300 fps. When I load the same bullet in the 22-250 I think that I put in around thirty seven grains of powder the achieve around 3600 fps.

The 22-250 really shines in the bigger bullets as it has the powder behind them to get them going so that they can carry the energy downrange. Go to http://www.seirrabullets.com or http://www.hornady.com and look around you should be able to look at the differences between the two.

Hope that this helps.

So this is kind of off the subject, but what do think about either of these cals for deer? I think they are both too light. Unless a 22-250 with a good 60grn bullet. My neighbor used his 223 this year and said it dropped him with no problem.

I like the .17 hmr and I would have to say the 22-250.
