.243 for for elk?

I have a .243 and was wondering if it is big enough for elk??

It is legal to use for elk but I would be more than hesitant to hunt elk with a .243. Don't get me wrong, it is a GREAT round but just doesn't have the energy for elk IMHO. A very well placed shot will do the trick but I wouldn't use anything less than a .270. I know a couple of folks that hunt elk with a .25-06 and do well. Others will tell you nothing less than a .30 and yet others will demand a magnum round.

Deer and antelope are perfect for the .243 but I'd want something with a bit more "oomph" for elk.

Not in my opinion....especially if you are not sure yourself. You can take elk with a 243 IF you use a good bullet, and IF you keep the range close, and IF you pick you shot very carefully. You can avoid these IF's by going to a heavier caliber. Elk can be cantakerous and flat out hard to kill. I have taken a few with the 25-06 Ackley, but I used a good bullet, kept my shots close, and picked my shots carefully.....and the 25-06 AI is a lot more gun than the 243.-------SS
