07 Blacktail Buck (Hybrid)

Well yesterday, I took my son (Cody) up to the local mountains to see if I could get him in on a few bucks I had scouted earlier this year. Just after sun-up, he spotted two forked horns bedded near a well used trail that we might be able to walk quietly on. After stalking into his effective range (less than 40 yards), he shot his first arrow of the season......just missing an opportunity to bring him home. He was disappointed but PUMPED! He's also hooked for life on this bowhunting stuff.
Wanting to let the bucks settle down for a day, we went out again this morning to an area I haven't been to in about 5 years. It used to be good before lions moved in and the bucks disappeared. Well, they're back! Just at daybreak, we were hiking up a steep trail when I saw a white faced deer looking at us from about 150 yards. I could tell the buck thought he was well hidden, so we both moved around a small knob to try and close the distance, keeping out of sight of the buck. Our arrangement has always been, that if he's a shooter buck, I would try to still get Cody in close enough, but if it's out of his range when we get as close as we can, I could take the shot. I needed to get Cody closer, but the buck got antsy and stood broadside at 55 yards.....too far for Cody. I whispered to him what he wanted to do......he gave me the thumbs up and answered "get him!"
I settled the pin on his chest and the rest is history......he only went about 50 yards. He's a 19" wide 3x3 (4x3 counting his one eyeguard) that will gross about 112" and net about 108" P&Y. Not a bad buck considering the lack of moisture we've had. I can't believe how dry it is out here.
As we boned out the buck, I looked across the canyon and spotted an absolute monster buck.....at least 22" wide and lots of mass. Cody's pretty excited, as I have no more tags for the zone and Cody's going to be able to hunt him during the rut. Hopefully we'll get some moisture and make things a bit quieter out there. Hope you enjoy the photos.

Good luck to Cody on that big one you spotted. Things will come together for him sooner or later (With a dad and hunting partner like you I'm sure it will be sooner rather than later!).
Thanks for sharing the pics and story.
Thanks for sharing, hope your boy has some more chances!
