11/12/2011-11/16/2011 Unit 34 NM muley hunt

I have an elk and muley tag this year and both are the first time for this Texan who is used to hunting for whitetail but now live in NM.. I assume that they will be in the early stages of their rut so they will be lower.... That is my question, do you hunt lower for them or can you find some huge bucks in the backcountry way up high at that point? I know that the max elevation is going to be around 9000-10000ft in my area and am just looking for some advice on what to do... I've hauled many a loaded pack up and down mountains before but never in the pursuit of a muleys... Just curious where I should start so that I can begin the scouting process.... Any help would be very welcome as I'm currently consumed with my preparation and scouting for my first ever elk hunt up in unit 51!!!
