1st time Colorado Mule Deer

Hello guys!

I am heading to the great state of Colorado in late Oct. for the 2nd Mule deer rifle season. This is my first time to hunt in Colorado. I am going with a group of friends and we are hunting near Pagosa Springs CO. Unit 77. I was looking for information about unit 77 and what quality of hunting you have there in this unit and what I could expect. If I get drawn.

Sorry, can't help you with CO. Just wanted to welcome you to MuleyMadness and say thanks for joining the forums. I'm sure there is someone that could help you out a little. Hope they do.

Good Luck this fall.

I am not familiar with that area down there, but if you are going to be in a national forest I would recommend getting in touch with someone from the forest service. I've found that even though most of the folks you talk to in a forest service office are not hunters, they can be pretty helpful in pointing you towards good areas and maybe steering you away from not so good or over-used areas. I would talk to them now, before the summer onslaught of tourists hits. In my experience, the folks in the forest service office want you to enjoy your time there no matter what you are doing, be it hiking, camping, fishing, or hunting. Division of Wildlife people can be helpful, but I've found that they can be a little stingy with information at times (but they probably get inundated with "where are the biggest bucks/bulls?"). Do you have a definite area in mind in the unit? I will check my big game CD and see what it says and post later.

OK Brew,
Here's what my CO big game CD says about unit 77. 80% of the unit is national forest, with part of it being in the Weminuche wilderness, which they say is pretty rough country. But overall they say access is pretty good. Deer hunting is good throughout the unit in the early seasons before the first major snow. Later in the season they recommend Devil Mountain and Mule Mountain. Early elk hunting is best within the wilderness area; othere recommended areas are west of Weminuche Valley, Williams Creek, Poison Park, and Plumtaw Creek. With 80% of the unit public land and 25% of that inside a wilderness area it sounds like it would be a great place to hunt!! Good luck, and I'd be interested in hearing how you make out there when it's all done.
