Two Poachers Plead Guilty To Killing Elk

Men Admit To Killing Bull Elk

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- Two men arrested in September for illegally killing a bull elk plead guilty Thursday in Jefferson County Court.

Kimberly Anthony Shrout, 54, and his son, Anthony Lee Eugene Shrout, 20, live in Rockport, Ill., and entered their guilty pleas through their attorney, the Jefferson County district attorney said.

In addition to other charges, both men pleaded guilty to the count of aggravated illegal possession of wildlife, which has been called "Samson's Law." The law is named for an elk illegally killed in Estes Park, and it carries a $10,000 penalty.

Officers from the Division of Wildlife received a call about a bull elk found dead at the corner of Hacienda and Soda Creek Drive on Sept. 13, authorities said. Officers waited for the hunters to return. After dark, three men were dropped off after dark to clean the animal, according to court records. Another man then picked up the men and the carcass, authorities said. At that time, all four men were arrested.

The two other suspects are charged with similar offenses. Their trials are expected to begin in June.

I just don't have any sympathy at all for any of these poaching rats.

I know how hard I hunt and when you hunt hard and take home a trophy it is very special. I also no it is never guaranteed and I have come home empty handed but happy with my effort and the experience.

To me this is just plain laziness and sloth. I will never understand how anyone could feel good about taking an animal this way. I also feel like every time one of these scum cowards does this it robs you and I of a hard earned legally taken trophy animal. ($$)

By the way the DOW has the mount of Samson and every year at the "Elk Fest" you can see the bull the law was named for. I got to see him the year he was poached and he was a fine specimen.

That was a sad deal to have that bull poached... But now Colorado has a Surcharge called the samson surcharge which is a higher fine for trophy aniamls that are poached. Persoanlly I feel all paoching should bring Felony Charges which being a Felony would keep the person from legally ever owning a firearm again.
