2004 Pauns. buck

Here's the buck I ended up shooting from the Paunsagaunt hunt this year. It's about time I drew out! I had 8 points.

Anyway, with full time school and work, I didn't have a lot of time to hunt, and I ended up with this buck.

He's 25 inches, a strait four point. His back right fork isn't really big. I shot at another nice four point, but missed ](*,) Dang scope! :)

I saw a real nice four or 5 point opening morning, but from about 800 yards, and never saw him again! There were hunters everywhere it seemed. They need to close the ol Pauns. for 5 years, as from what I saw the deer population isn't very great, in spite of what they say. IMHO

So I'm pretty happy with the buck I got, considering all. He's not a monster, but I sure had fun hunting! Thats what keeps be going back every single year, it's just plain fun. Hows everybody else doing?

akw270,

can't complain there, at least I wouldn't think so! Thats a pretty good deer! I was always under the influence that the Paun. was a super hard area to draw and if you did draw you would be one of few that drew. with that being said, i am surprised that you saw alot of hunters. what is the size of the unit and to your knowledge how many tags are offered for this area. just curious i guess.

needless to say, congratulations on a fine animal and looking forward to sharing stories and photos from my hunt, which i leave for tomorrow evening.

Well, it is very hard to draw on the Paunsagaunt, and yes there are lot less hunters. I heard that they even cut the tags in half this year, but I am not sure how many tags were given? I suppose also that all the orange was not from hunters, (as I was the only in my group of 4 with a tag)

I'll see if I can figure out how many tags were given, as you pricked my interest! Any rate, thanks, and gook luck tomorrow!

Nice work!! I had the privilege of tagging along with "akw270" for the opening day of his Paunsaugunt hunt. Fun stuff, we tried to get on the "big one" but he eluded us as already mention. He definitley made this one look small. No offense. :)

We saw a few other 4-points, none of which were much bigger than this one. Unfortunatley he bagged this buck when I wasn't there. :(

Here are a couple of pics from a couple of bucks we chased or that ran by me with the video camera.

Way to go guys. Nothing wrong with that buck AK! It's a lot bigger than my book blacktail I arrowed today. Of course, they (blacktails) are dinky dog rat deer. 8-[ Congrats AK, sounds like you guys had a good time.

that is some great footage guys, them deer over there on the paun. have got some enormous bodies. i always liked them big ole' bodied sons a guns! thanks for the info. i have always wanted to apply for this area, but for some crazy reason the finances are just never there when the time rolls around. I always have got so many plans for wyoming, i just can't afford to apply in other states, someday i suppose. hoping to apply for an elk tag in montana next year. not so much as the bulls in montana get super big, which some of them do, but i have a buddy in billings and he and i use to hunt alot together but now neither one of us can afford to come or go when it comes to applying for other states.

anyways i will be signing off for a couple weeks as of today so i will check in and hopefully have some good photos when i return.

Looks to me like your buddy got some film of your buck before you shot it--that's cool! On your buddy's post, is the top picture your buck? It sure looks like him.

quickdrawkinker,

Great question and I didn't realize how similar these two bucks were until you mentioned it. However, it isn't the same buck. Was killed within 10 miles of the buck in the photo though. Same type genetics obviously.

Congratulations on your buck! I'm looking forward to hunting on the Pauns again someday, either with my own tag or by accompanying my Dad who has 12 or 13 BP's as a NR...geez he should draw next year right?

Think we'll be putting in for the muzzleloader hunt in 2005. What part of the unit did you hunt in?

AZBuckSnort,

Man with that many NR points he has to be getting real close? I had 8 resident points when I drew the tag 2 years ago. We usually hunt the northern end of the Paunsaugunt, but have been all over.

This is in the state of Utah, one of the better units in the state. Or use to be anyway. :)
