2009 deer hunt

I had big plans this year to shoot a big buck or go home empty handed. About a month ago my 12 year old son asked me if he could go. I was kind of shocked he has never shown any interest in hunting, of course I said yes. So know what, I really had my hopes set on a big buck and had the whole week, my boy on the other hand had to be home on Sunday. On Thursday we headed to the hills, 5 hours later we got camp set up and went looking for some deer, we seen a few smaller bucks and one 16-18" 3x3. Friday same story. So Saturday morning rolls around and we decide to check out an area that we had seen most of the deer in, about 8:30 a.m. we spot a couple of deer way up at the top of the drainage we are in, they were a lot bigger than the rest of the deer we have seen but I couldn't be sure they were bucks, as we try to get closer I spotted a couple other smaller bucks and my son got real excited and kept asking me "can we shoot them", I told him if we get close enough. I met up with my friend Matt and his son and we snuck over the hill 200 yds from the bucks with the boy looking on I ended our hunt. This is by far not the biggest buck I have shot, or one I had hoped for but in the end it might just be the best one ever.

Nice job. That might just be what he needed to get him hooked. You just might have you another hunting buddy now.

Right on man thats always great fun bringing the boy with you, I'm going to have a tough time on my hunt this year without my boy. I have been taking my boy with me since he was 4 and he is 7 now but this year a burned 11 prefrence points on a colorado buck hunt so I have to leave him at home :>/ this year because I cant take him out of school for the 10 day trip. He was bummed out about it so I booked a pig hunt so we both get to have fun after all. Anyway I'm glad to see that your boy liked the hunt and I hope you two have many more together. :thumb

Great hunt! Nice buck. I'm glad that you got to share this with your son. Some of my greatest memories, are being with my kids when they got their animals. You are off to a great start. =D> =D> =D>

On a side note the deer that I had seen at the top of the drainage were bucks, one was a 24ish 4x4 and the other a 3x2 around 20". One of my friends shot the 3x2, the 4x4 made it out of the canyon unscathed.

Way to go Jeff. =D> I'm hoping to take my girls out after school since I'll be hunting in my back yard.

my favorite posts are the ones with a father taking his kids hunting with him.
congrats to you on the buck , but more importantly on being a great dad! those are things a kid will never forget and that is more important than a deer mount anyday IMO!

Jeff,
Camp was great and we had fun especially watching how excited your boy was. He's a great shooter too, better than half the guys in camp. He can use my rifle any time. We didn't find the bucks we wanted, but I made a long day of hunting those ruffs on the east side where I saw that monster buck. No doubt there are big bucks over there and I found a shed to prove it. Amazing that that big boy shed at over 8500ft. Next year maybe we'll find him. Thanks again.----shooter

The whole way home, when he wasnt sleeping, he asked about hunter safety and what kind of rifle we should get him. I think he's hooked. Sad part is he lives with his mom and I'm at her mercy, she wasn't going to let him go this time because "people get shot deer hunting". He was a little worried about that, until I told him more people get shot in SLC in a week than while deer hunting.

Way to go Jeff =D> , just try to keep him excited about the outdoors and hunting and he will take care of the "mom" situation Im sure. Kids are really persistent when they want something bad enough. My favorite hunt is archery hunt and this year I took my girlfriend out a lot and only took my bow out once. It was her first time hunting and she got a nice 4-point for her first deer ever. She even wrote a story about it for her college class. Ill have to post it up on here sometime. The excitement and fun she had on the hunt made it one of my best hunts ever. Now shes already talking about going and scouting her own deer next year and picking one out shes gonna go after.. Shes also bugging me about gettin her a new bow, but Id say thats a good problem to have. lol
