2010 Colorado Muzzy Hunt Advice Requested

Hey all,

I was able to go on my first western hunt this year in New Mexico and I am hooked.

I cant wait until next year! My hunt this year was an elk hunt in a wilderness area and I really enjoyed the lack of people and pressure, the high altitude and the abundance of animals. I would like a similar experience for my first mule deer hunt.

I have decided to try to put in for a Colorado Muzzleloader Deer hunt since I would like to hunt the high country without the crowds. I like high alpine hunts >10,000 feet and I am willing to hike and work hard to get an animal and pack them out.

I have been researching on the net and reading on this site. I have read the colorado DOW statistics to research which units that fit the bill. Of the units which are alpine, wilderness hunts that have information on the statistics page, I have it narrowed down to the following.

Units requiring no points for Nonres Muzzy Hunt:
7, 43, 44, 75, 444

Which of these units do you all think would provide the best opportunity for a first time mule deer hunter?

Also, I have a question on why some units were not included in the statistics link for a DM...01M hunt code, such as 36, 45, 47 to name a few.

Lastly, I noticed that there are chances to hunt an early rifle unit with no points, such as 47 E1R. Is this a typo or do you think it is true?

Thanks for any help and sorry for all the questions.

Guess you don't have any points by the units you list. I really don't think the actual unit of those makes a lot of difference. I have hunted 43, and would do it just because I know it better from my time invested. If you are starting from nothing, it does not matter. Pick one and stay with it. You just have to get up high and glass a lot. They stay bedded in the serviceberry and whatever most of the day that time of year. So, you have to know where to look when the time is right. Backpacking allows you to look/hunt prime time. The quick once over in non prime time will not reveal much. I can't believe how many guys I talked to on my hunts that time of year tell me there are no deer in the areas I hunted. If you find a spot that looks bucky, spend an evening and morning glassing it before moving. Good Luck...
