2014 is a go

I have been hovering around this site for a while and finally decided to register after reading the wealth of info you guys give.
A little about my self. I'm from the north Bay Area(ca) I finally got my first buck last year after a couple years. I grew up pheasant duck and pig hunt my whole life along with fishing. Always heard stories of my dad going out of state 30 sum odd years ago muley and elk hunting and I finally have the money to go. So this year I'm trying to plan a trip to either colorado or idaho.(most likely idaho) I'm trying to pick an area but I have never been out of state hunting so I have no clue. I've looked at the harvest stats and draw odds. But that only goes so far. If anyone would mind sharing any infor or tips that would be great. Not looking for specifics or honey holes. What should my expectations be. I'm willing to work my ass off for a deer. Not looking for a trophy just an animal to get my feet wet... Any help expectations and info would greatly be appreciated
