When I spot a skittish critter like an eagle, I take a quick shot and then sneak up a little, take another photo, sneak some more, etc. until they get tired of me and fly off. Sometimes if I don't look directly at them, and close the distance at an angle, they will tolerate me long enough to get a decent photo.
