A pic from Hokkaido

I know this may not be the right place to post this, so I'll apoligize in advance . I moved to Japan about a year ago and had the incredible luck of meeting a hunter who helped me get my licence here. The bag numbers are RIDICULUS( 2 1/2 month season, no limit on does, one buck per person per day) and last season was a blast. I took the attached picture in January while sitting on a trail literally a hundred yds off the Pacific Ocean. It's a real nice buck. Ones of this caliber are quite hard to find because they are so spooky from the constant hunting. I already had my buck for the day, so I had fun taking pictures instead.

Thats a nice picture. There must not be the hundreds of thousands of hunters there like we have here.

Actualy bull elk calls do work in the fall, but the cow call is quite different. It's more like a high schrilled dog bark, and it is much shorter in length. Bigger bulls can reach 250kg, or about 550 pounds. They are quite crafty buggers, but many are taken because of thier curiosity. More than once have I stalked up on a group, only to be eventually spotted, but to my surprise some would actualy aproach me (like the one in the picture) until getting good wind or getting shot.

It really has been a blast and there are no shortage of animals. Almost all the hunters are older and do not wander far from the roads. Not much else to hunt, other than bears. There is a wide variety here. Some are like the average Pacific Northwest black bear, while others are more of the diarrhea inducing caliber. I have seen some mounts that are unbelievable. The heads on the big bears here are something I have never seen, about the same diameter as a 55 gallon drum. I assume there is some relation to the Eastern Russian bears, I hope I never get close enough to find out, but there seem to a few hunters every year who mysteriously don't return home.
