Alaska Bear Hunt Bullet Suggestions

I am heading to Alaska on a Bear hunt end of May. I m going to be using a 30-06 for the hunt and am after some great bullets with knock down power. What would everyones suggestions be for manufacture, type and grain? Thanks for your help.

I agree with Killer on the a-frame and barnes bullet. I would only add that for big bears I would only use 180gr bullets and I would limit shot distance. There are other good bullets that would work fine, but no need to look past the mentioned ones. I might lean toward the barnes with a 30-06 because you can usually get 50-75 fps more velocity with them and velocity + mass = deep penetration and vital organ destruction which are both great when the target has teeth and claws. I also agree to get lots of pics.....after the 180 tsx's have done their job.-----SS

My suggestion is the 180 gr tsx.IMO the best bullet on the market :thumb

Thanks for all the suggestions. I bought the bullets today, I talked with Cabelas, Sportsmans, and a few local shops and they all agreed. I went with the Barnes triple shock 180gr bullet. Hopefully the 30-06 has enough knock down power.

The old 06 has more than enough poop to drive that 180 TSX deep enough to kill any bear in the woods.--------SS

What bear are you hunting? Knowing the bears of alaska, if your hunting the Kodiak.. I don't think the 30-06 will do it. A black bear... it will.
I am a fan of the Nosler Partitions. Load em' hot.

what kind of bears are you hunting because that makes a huge difference in bullets and weapon choice

No matter what bear your hunting as long as your shot placement is where it should be the 06 is all you will need :thumb

+1....so practice like your life depends on your marksmanship and then go drop 1000+ pounds of meat on the ground with one well-placed 180TSX. Be sure to get pics of the bullet....if it doesn't pass all the way through.-------SS

I will be sure to take pictures of the hunt and bullet if it doesn't pass all the way through. We will be hunting black bears in South East Alaska. Average skull with the outfitter measures 19 1/2 inches with some bears hitting the 21 inch mark. Should be a good time. I hope to get a color phase bear! Leave on May 12th and back on May 21st.

Just got home from the hunt late last night. I shot a great black bear. I will post story and pics later. It squared out at 7 ft 8 in and the skull is 19 1/2. I shot it the last night. Thank you for your help on bullet suggestions. When I go again I will take a bigger gun, although my 30 06 knocked him down first shot. Those bears are tougher than most people think. They can take a lot of lead.
