All the muley gurus please score my first muley

Hey eveyone this is my first mule deer. I live in SW Colorado, more specifically Durango. I've been here just about 7 years and mostly hunt elk in early seasons. I don't hunt deer that often, although I do put in for deer tags every year. The reason I don't hunt deer is because I usually get an elk every year. This year I didn't get an elk so I took full advantage of my deer tag and got the gift of a lifetime. I was wondering what the mule deer gurus think my first muley scored. I've heard anywhere from 175 to199 on gross from the locals and 170 to 195 on net. I didn't know that score was so important when telling people about your muley.. the most info I can give you is that it's spread was around 29.5 to 30.5 and my wife in the picture is about 5'10" and mty daughter just over 2 foot. I'd love to hear any input. Thanks

Thanks MULEY7MM for the input. If I get a chance I'll swing by the taxidermist and get what his opinion is for my muley or maybe a few measurments to help in the scoring.

Very nice buck! Congratulations. My "guess" based on a photo would be in the mid to upper 170's net. Very nice......no matter what the official measurement ends up being.

I agree with the last two "guesstimates"....mid 170's.

However, I would also say that it is one heck of a buck regardless!!!!

CONGRATS!

I came up with 174" gross. I want to know who guessed in the 190s? I need to use their tape on some of my deer. :)) Like the other guys have said, score really doesn't mean much. If it looks great to you, that's all that really matters. Sawtooths buck didn't score as well as I thought it would but it's still a very good looking buck.

It's a great buck no matter what he scores, I'm going to go against the crowd and say he would be 180-181. I would shoot him any day of the week though awesome buck.

Scoring is not that hard to do, get yourself a ¼ inch wide tap measure and down load the scoring form from B&C, this will not be an official score but it should be close. Of if Ron still works down at Garndenswarts (spelling) on main, he might help you. I’d guess mid 170’s (175/176).
Very nice animal =D>
There are still some very nice bucks in the Durango are, hunt all over there during collage.

Thanks for all the input from everyone. I'll have to wait untill I get him back from the taxidermist to measure him out. Good luck to all this hunting season.

I'm with bonehead.

14 and 15" G2's, 7-8" G3's 9-10" G3's and 24-25" beams, 24" spread credit, on the generous side. Not a lot of mass, Maybe 28", 160-165.

Nice buck though.

I shot one about that size 3 years ago. He was around 172. You have a fine trophy no matter what he scores.

Okay , the taxidermist said about 178-180 gross and 172-174 net. I can't wait to get him back and put him on the wall. It's going to be 12-15 months before he's ready. It'll be a great Christmas present next year.

I found myself in your same predicament this year. I've taken buck but never anything that got me excited about finding the B&C score until this year. I shot a 28" 5x6 with good mass and deep forks. I did a google search for how to score a Boone and Crockett buck and came accross several sites that allow you to print a Boone and Crockett Club official scoring system for north american big game trophies. The first sheet is a worksheet to record the various measurments. The second is instructions on how to measure each spread, length, and circumference. It won't be an official score but it will get you very close.

As per gross vs net, I'm all about the gross. With net you lose inches for any thing that is not symetrical. My buck scores 196 2/8" gross but has to be deducted by 7 4/8" to get my typical net score. That drops it to a 188 6/8". It drops because of two cheaters on the left antler and one on the right. 190" net is the magical all time B&C trophy mark. I like the cheaters and the character of a little non symetry. So I'm happily forgoing the all time book and setteling for the awards book which requires minimum 180".

My buck is on the first page under the photo tab. It's the Kevin Johnson buck. Here's a site to try. At the site you can download a PDF scorechart. http://www.boone-crockett.org/bgRecords/ScoringYourTrophy.asp?area=bgRecords - 15k -

Congats on a great buck. I won't venture a guess on your buck as I thought mine would be in the high 170's while in camp. Just a little off.
