Any bighorn fans?

These are of the California Bighorn subspecie. Oregon has quite a few of these in the arid basalt faults and rims throughout the central and southeast part of the state.

This ram walked over to a pile of boulders and began scratching his butt on a rock...

...and judging by his reaction, it felt mighty good!

At times the rams let me get to within 60-70 ft. I started out in full view of the rams, and slowly moved toward them. When I'd get to a rock I'd sit down and ignore them for awhile. Soon they'd just go about their business so I'd take a few photos and get up and move closer. By the time they bedded down they weren't concerned with me at all.

I was wondering where they were also. I know of reports along I 84 but haven't known where they are. Get to Biggs several times a year and have never noticed them. Maybe knot looking good enough as I don't expect them there. The thing I never hunted and wanted to was sheep. I could be just as happy hunting them with a camera.

These are I-84 rams, east of the John Day River. I usually see them anywhere from MP117 to about MP128 at Blalock Canyon. I've heard the OSP have been stopping and threatening to write tickets if you stop to photograph the sheep. ODFW trapped a bunch of the sheep last winter and transplanted them elsewhere, but they didn't get them all. Somebody told me they saw a bunch of big rams up there a month or so ago.

I'd love to hunt an Oregon sheep also! Been applying now since 1973, so I guess my pref. pts. aren't helping me out? ](*,)

I had a cousin, deased now, that had one of the first three or five tags. Don't remember for sure how many there were on that first hunt. He was the only one to go without a guide anf the only one not to get a sheep. That was a long time ago!

i see the sheep around blalock canyon almost everytime i take that trip. there are some hogs there. i get people mad at me all the time for takeing up 2 lanes of the road looking for them. and then it stinks cause if you see them to late alot of times you have to drive 10 miles to turn around ](*,) if you look good your bound to see sheep on that drive.
