I have been looking at scouting pictures and it looks like the deer are still in velvet? ARe they? And if so how long till they start hardening up and are polished?

I am from Michigan, I am bringing my 75 year old father out to hunt northwest Utah, Up near grouse creek area. This will be his first and probably last mule deer hunt. I was suposed to go with him white tail hunting this year but I couldn't get the time off. Since he can't go without me I thought I would take him out west after a mule deer. He is really excited about coming out. Neither one of us have ever been to Utah and neither one of us have ever taken a mule deer before.

Harvey, I hope things work out good for you. The bucks rut in Nov. and will be all rubbed off by your hunt. I would let your guide know/think that your standards are high and don't shoot anything less than a 170" 28" wide or a 170" heavy 24" buck. That way he will try to find you the better bucks on the property. What might be hard for you is what a lot of us are seeing out here for an average buck may look huge to you but that really doesn't matter. In the end, if it looks great to you. Then go ahead and shoot.

Good luck

Thanks Ridgetop! You are right, every picture I have seen of a mule deer makes a northern whitetail look more like a gopher! I think a white tail with a 12 to 14 inch spread is a monster and they only weigh about 165 pounds. In my area you are lucky to see on that big!

I'm in Northern Nevada and saw my first buck with velvet hangin' off of his antlers on Wednesday August 26th. Grouse Creek is High Desert and has some good bucks in the area but are not easy to find. I've heard that there is a lot of hunting pressure but I've never been there during hunting season. The velvet on the antlers will definitely be gone at the end of September and there should be some cooler weather than what we are having right now especially at night. Be ready for any kind of weather and above all, have a good time no matter wether you harvest or not. You might even want to see the metropolis town of Montello, Nevada. fatrooster.

Montello Nevada huh? Metropolis, I can't even spell big city words! Might be fun to scoot across into Nevada just to say we did.

Harvey, The Grouse Creek area is a fun but challenging hunt I hunt there most of the time not really expecting to shot anything big, but always on the lookout. There are some big deer there two years ago I got a nice 25" 4x4, last year I heard of one that was killed in the 28" range, there are good deer out there if you know where to look. Are you being guided or are you going on the public and I might be able to help out a little.
