ATTENTION: NEW OR STRUGGLING HUNTERS

I thought it would be nice if some of us would pitch in and help some of the newbies or each other with unfamiliar areas or hunting techniques. We could use this thread as a reference for contacts on different areas around the country. What do you think? Would you guys be willing to share info. about areas you know well. I'm not talking about honey holes but general regions, units or mountain ranges. I'll start things off. If anyone needs help or info. on Utahs Central Region, the Southern Regions (Washington County) or Salt Lake and Davis Counties. Just ask and hopefully someone will come foreward to help. Be as specific as possible. PMs would be most welcome. Also, although I've hunted all types of terrain. I enjoy the higher elevations above 8,000' , glassing basins and burn areas.

Thanks ridgetop, I was going to ask a few questions in the next few days anyway. I was thinking of applying for unit 7 for Elk in WY. I've got max points and have done some research. It will be my first DIY hunt and from what I've found, it looks like a good first hunt. Killerbee has also helped me out with some great info. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I might as well throw this out there too. I know that not too many people would be heading out my way, but if you are ever coming to NJ, I can help out with hunting or fishing. Mostly saltwater fishing, but we also have some decent trout waters. Believe it or not, we've got some awesome tuna and white marlin fishing. Last year we had an exceptional bigeye bit and the whites were plentiful as well. I am also in the tire and auto business, been doing it since I was 13. If I can't answer the question, I can ask one of my mechanics, or reach out to some other people I know in the business. I would really like to give back a little being that I don't have a heck of a lot to contribute. Thanks.

Does anyone hunt Bear in Washington State? Since they've outlawed Bait here I've ordered up a couple of predator calls to give it a try this August and September. The family has 5 acres off Forrest Service Road 6910 near the rest area on Stevens pass (Hwy 2) so was gonna try around there. Any advise or better areas would be most helpful as this is my first Bear hunt.

Late as always, I can help with California, Northern Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, and a little of Utah and Wyoming. I like to backpack hunt roadless areas and stillhunt through primetime and then glass bedding areas during the day. I had the pleateau antelope buck tag last year and can help with that even though it's probably not needed in that zone. Also, if anyone needs to add a true blacktail to their trophy room, I've been chasing them since I was a kid. Glad to help. I guess if I had an "expertise" it would probably be rifle shooting and reloading.------SS

I think this is great. We have hunted SE Utah (La Sal) the last few years, but we are thinking about switching areas. Last year was bad. Between 8 hunters we saw 10 bucks and none of them to write home about. We are thinking about switching to CO and trying to draw MD, but will buy over the counter Elk tags at the minimum. Any suggestions on where to go. We like unpopulated areas off the main drag.

This post was a great idea so I thought I would resurrect it. My buddy drew an archery antelope tag on the Plateau/Boulder unit and I am tagging along with him. Since it's opening weekend and I have a deer tag (and the fever real bad) I'm going to hunt deer. Anyone have any info on the deer in that unit? We'll be camped in the Big Lake area (I think). I've been scouring maps for the past few days to try and figure out what my options are. I had no intentions of hunting down there until last week so any info would be greatly appreciated. I have hunted the Wasatch front a lot (just like everyone else) so if you need some info I'll try to help. Thanks!

I would try the North Fork Rock Creek stream head, as I have hiked up there and seen some really nice deer when I went. But if you don't want to hike a long way back, then you should try the EAST side of Bonito Mountain. Hope this helped

Hello all, I am new to the site and basically new to hunting out west. I have lived in the south my whole life (except a 3 year hitch in West Texas). I have hunted and fished for just about everything available in MS, AR, LA, MS, and TN. I try to make a couple of weekend trips to the coast with my friend and go offshore in his boat. I finally reached a point in my life where I can make some time between work and family to hunt and fish some. If anyone needs help in the above states or wants to go offshore fishing, I'll help any way I can. Due to the 1000 miles I am from the mountains, scouting trips will probably not work too well. I will never ask for a honey hole!! As I learn more about units/areas, I will be more than happy to share info with new hunters and hunters like me who live far away or whose schedule won't allow them to scout an area, esp. with a good tag.

My dad and I were lucky enough to draw WY 47 antelope tags this year, and this will be our first trip out west in 15 years, so any help will be appreciated.

Looking forward to learning more about western hunting.

Wyoming unit 47 is a good unit and lots of public land yo will see tons of antelope and of course you will probably see a bunch of other hunters. Bring good optics and a spotting scope if you have one, knee and elbow pads are recomended for crawling on the cactus covered terrain.

No need to worry though, you should have lots of opportunities to get a good goat. Make sure you get your BLM maps and if you have a GPS. I recomend that you get the card that shows public and private ownership there is no comparison when you have the GPS and map together you will always know where you are.
1
Default Avatar
I have never hunted that area but my buddy swears he saw more rattle snakes than we do in the mojave preserve here in California. That is a lot of snakes as we see at least one a day and most times more out there. Look out as your crawling through those cacti! Good luck. If you would let us know how your hunt went. thanks.

Thanks for the info GreatWhite and Codyca. I have also heard there are a lot of rattlesnakes up there. I almost got used to them while I lived in West Texas for 3 years, but haven't seen one in a while. Maybe it will be cold by the time we get there. GreatWhite, I have my GPS and ordered my BLM map today. Plan on doing some studying before we go and while we are on our 19 hour drive up there. I was told that the unit is pretty crazy, so we are going toward the end of the season to hopefully not be bumping into everyone.

Hello fellow hunters, I have made trips these 2 past years to wy for antelope and I will be going back there for my first muley hunt this fall. The unit that I will be hunting in is unit 60, a limited quota unit, and I plan to focus on the medicine bow area as that is the only significant amount of public land in the unit. I just started hunting Archery deer in the great state of Utah and am very excited to shoot my first Utah Mule deer. I drew out for unit 17A and have been having a really hard time locating deer this year. I have started scouting Provo canyon in a location that held a pretty good amount of deer the last time I hunted the area. I have heard because of the dry season we are having the deer are at much higher altitudes. I have moved up the canyon just above where I have previously hunted in the past and have found a few deer trails that look like they are used often but the trail camera is only turning up a few does within a three or four day period of time. I have moved up further into the canyon and seen only a few does here and there. To me it seems like the deer are really spread out and for me hard to locate. of course I am a beginner and do not have very much experience but I am getting really frustrated at this point and would love any advice I can get. Also very great full to see this thread thanks!

Drew out for the Pine Valley unit in Utah.....I have never hunted the unit before. I am a dedicated hunter and will be hunting all three seasons....my father has a rifle tag. I have been out scouting multiple times and have come across some decent bucks.....I would really like to start getting into the high wilderness areas to hunt during the archery and muzzle loader...any tips on where to start? Also I have heard that the muleys in this unit start to migrate during the rifle hunt....this has me concerned because all the deer that I have found scouting will possibly relocate. How early does this deer heard start to migrate? Do they need snow to kick them into migration or are they more like paunsagaunt deer and move when its "time"? Any tips or areas to try to hunt is appreciated.

I have some experience hunting colorado near the rout divide in unit 27. I was muzzle hunting deer at the time but according to the elk activity that I saw while I was there I think it would be an awesome area for elk muzzle or elk rifle. Anyone in need of any info on that area feel free to pm me. Hunted right beside unit 15 there and beleive I could be helpful to a unit 15 hunter.

I am also from the east and have a ton of information on fishing the lake erie and lake ontario tributaries for steelhead, browns and salmon.

I need infor on colorado's unit 62. Me and my father and law have a 2nd rifle deer tag and will be buying a bull tag also. Will be hunting off of the divide road any info would be helpful. Thanks.

I was in that area last year, my wife had a rifle tag and from what I saw and what I was told from other hunters who hunted the area the whole rifle season the mature bucks didn’t move down until the end of the rifle hunt. I think it really depends on the weather if it remains hot probably about the same if it gets cold they’ll move sooner.
