Avintaquin 7th

HI,
I'm hunting Avintaquin 7th season for cows this...well I guess next year (late January). Was wondering if anyone had any info about the unit that time of year? Seems like it'll be pretty played out by then... Just looking for any info at all- access, private property issues etc. Thanks.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but elk meat is running low on the Avinaquin as well. There are still a few around, but your work is cut out for you. ---------------SS

That will be a COLD hunt. I had a friend that made a mistake on his entry and got a Dec tag a couple of years ago. It was bitter cold in that canyon the first week of Dec. We rode horses in and it was pretty brutal. Snow was 2 foot deep and had a very thick crust. Almost impossible for the horses to get through.

I don't know where the elk wil be in January. So I'm not much help in giving advice for that time of year. But I have found lots of sheds up on the sunny side of the wind blown ridges. So either the elk moved back up into the 8000 foot elevation before dropping their sheds or spent the winter there.
