Well, my wife and I both put in for tags in New Mexico this year and drew out. Other than a 2-day trip to California, I've never hunted out of state. So we were both pretty excited. We got to scout some in July and only saw 2 bucks, but we stayed optimistic for September. We met up with a couple of friends on monday and started glassing that night. We saw lots of does but thats it. On the third day I talked to a guy who worked in the area, and he told me where he had been seein two bucks pretty regularly. Well that evening we found them right at dark, but the wind was no good and legal shooting hours were almost over. So I told my wife we'd back out and find them in the morning. We hunted them 3 more days and never saw them again. Second to last day while every one else slept at camp, I found a deer bedded in a wash and we started stalkin. We got 40 yards away and the deer finally lifted its head, another doe. A little dissapointed we packed camp Friday mornin' to head home. On the way home, we saw a spot we liked and both got the same idea. Screw work! We hit the back roads and started glassin'. At about noon, my wife spotted a buck bedded. We ditched the jeep and took off. We cut fresh tracks and started in the dunes. One set was big! We got close and left our shoes behind, stalkin on socked feet in the sand. A few hundred yards and I spotted antlers only 20 yards away! A nice 3x3! We had no shot with all the brush, so we crept foward. The buck stood and we froze. Finally not likin what he saw, he turned and trotted off. My wife drew and the second buck, a smaller 3x3 stopped broadside. I watched as he trotted off too! I asked my wife what happened? She said all she could see was his neck and didnt feel good about it. So we tracked them almost another mile till we lost them. A little dissapointed and sore footed, we walked back to the jeep and headed east. Both still a little shaky from such an awesome expierence. We still have a few days in January to hunt and cant wait to go back. As I climb in my treestand next week to sit and wait on Mr. Whitetail, I'm afraid my mind will be back in the sand dunes trackin big forked horn muleys and wonderin why January is takin so long to get here. I think I caught MULEY MADNESS!
