Best Maps???

Hey guys, I've been doing a lot of "virtual" scouting lately and was wondering what everyones' favorite maps/remote scouting techniques are? The main things I'm curious about are which maps give the most detail and the cost of these maps, any software that anyone uses that is user friendly and gives good info., and anybody's experience with printing your own maps. Any other useful info. you want to provide would be awesome too! I'm mostly looking for Colorado and New Mexico information, but any info. would be great! Thanks!

I like the virtual scouting like you said. Google Earth did really well for me last year for my Archery hunt in Arizona. I found my campsite that I have never been to before and 10pm. It really gives you an idea of what your looking at.

Google earth all the way...Hunt maps.com are really good too...And you might want to try the Delorme PC program...I used it last year for my Kaibab deer hunt and it really helped me out...Good luck

Thanks for the replys! Like the rest of you, I have been using google earth to search around for some good spots. Only problem I've really found so far is that there are too many "bucky" areas! :)

Does anyone know if you can overlay a private/public land map on top of google earth? I realize you can find a map and trace the areas out yourself, but man what a pain!!!

You can overlay a map on google earth. I'm not exactly sure how, but I know it can be done.

Here is a link to the instructions for it. http://earth.google.com/userguide/v4/ug_imageoverlays.html

Let us know if you pull it off.

Interesting, love GoogleEarth also...Never looked at the over-lay program, but just may have to play with it now....The Hunt'n Fool has a pretty good map program for members also!

This is as close as you can get...

Shows BLM,school, military,NF,indian reservations...Over on the tool bar to the right click PLSS off to get rid of the grid.

Thanks again for all the replies everyone! I used took some of the info. ya'll provided and was able to overlay a public/private land map on google earth pretty easily (posted a pic. below). I used the maps off of the NM fish and game web site and the maps posted by PLP and followed the instructions posted by Sewing. You can make the maps as transparent as you want, so you can still see the terrain very well when the map is overlayed...plus, you can always uncheck it and the overlay goes away until you want it to show up again. Just wanted to say thanks for all the input and let everyone know that it was pretty easy. If anyone has any questions just post a reply and I'll try to answer! Oh, yeah, the pic is of units 2a,2b, and 2c in New Mexico.
