big dilema

well
im kinda faced with a dilema i have 2 165-175+ bucks spotted in a little hideaway i would really like to go after, one is an inline 28''+ 5x5 and the other 25'' ish 4x4 id glady take either one! my dilema tho is i have my archry LE elk tag to fill also!! so do i try for the bucks opening day or go after big bulls? there is a possibility of elk being in the same area ...i seen some kinda older tracks in there but didnt see any elk when i found these bucks.. the deer hunt gets more pressure im not sure how many people drop down into theis little hideaway during the hunt. ive never hunted it just kinda discovered it with those bucks in it. i know areas near by get lots of pressure. so do i try for the deer opening morning or go for elk and risk someone else finding these deer or possibly bumping them? im thinkin if i dont go after the deer right away they may nit stay there...so im leanin toward the deer as i have no true monster bulls in sight as of now.if i find a giant bull between now and the hunt there will be no question what i will go after. but that 5x5 is a dandy general season buck he could possibly push 180 i am thinkin lower 170's tho...they were a a long way away and i didnt get closer casue i didnt want to disturb them.... i just new they were good bucks and new id arrow either one! now the elk as the hunt gets later i have better chance at finding them as the rut closes in. the deer get tougher to hunt??? what should i do any suggestions!?

You have a LE tag right OX? Go for the Bull Elk if that's the case, those tags don't come around often.

Go get your elk for sure... Their is always next year for deer... Don't waste your points to not even hunt elk... IMO

I have to agree with Brett. You used alot of points to get that LE tag so even though you don't have a monster spotted you might stumble upon one by just being in the unit. Good Luck with the tag OX and make us all proud.

That is a tough one, but I would have to agree with the other guys. Concentrate on your elk tag, those tags are gold! If you can't resist, dedicate a couple days up front to get the deer, but save the latter part of the hunt for the elk. It seems to me that the best time to go after elk during the archery is at the end in September. Also, those deer have survived this long without getting killed, chances are they will again and since you know where they are you could go back next year and kill one with a 350 class bull in your pocket. Good luck!

YUP! I would have to agree with the others, my friend. I would concentrate on filling that LE tag of yours.

GOOD LUCK though....I'm sure I am not the only one who WISHED they had to make choices like that!

I say go after the deer. spend the weekend trying for them then start looking for your elk.
longer you wait on elk the more likly you will be able to call them in.

Definitely spend most of your time on the LE elk but I think you're right in thinking about trying the deer initially and then spending the last weeks and the best weeks on elk. Best of luck and post pictures of your deer and elk for us to see.

I don't know which LE tag you have but in Utah LE Elk is starting to become a "once in a lifetime" in the draw process. Concentrate on the elk.

if you end up eating "tag soup " this year, i'd bet you wished you still had just a couple days.

even if they were the first 2-3 days, i'd bet you'd love to have them back.

it's a general area, so for the next 15+ yrs, when your building points to hunt elk again, you can spend many days up there finding those bucks.

i say from the opening day till the end of it, spend every chance you can to cut your tag on a big ol' bull!

If it's an out of the way place, maybe you will see the nice bull in the same area once some pressure comes in. I think it's worth being a starting point if you haven't found anywhere else to go after the LE tag.

I hunt deer on Panugitch Lake, their are some decent deer on the mountain... I would hunt hard for elk, and if a buck crosses you, let it fly.

I agree, Utah is getting harder and harder to draw a LE Elk tag. I would put all your time and energy into finding that big bull. You never know when you just might stumble upon that giant bull!
