New World Record Muzzleloader Mule Deer?
September 26th, 2006 David King - King's Outdoor World

Can you believe it? Our very own Hunting Illustrated South of the Border editor just knocked down a monster buck with his muzzleloader. Arnold Sandoval got lucky and drew the mule deer Super Tag for Nevada for 2006. The Super Tag allows him to hunt during all seasons statewide as long as he hunts with the appropriate weapon for that unit and season. He was planning on holding out until late November for the rut to kick in. However, he decided to go out last week with his muzzleloader. He came across a huge buck. It is a 25×27 point, 38-inches wide and green scores 304 gross! This buck still has the velvet intact and is considered a cactus buck. We will have to wait and see how this affects the eligibility for Boone & Crockett. The current world record muzzleloader non-typical mule deer was taken by Lloyd Barton in 1993 in southern Utah and scores 293 6/8 net B&C.

Stay tuned for more....and make sure you are current on your subscription to Hunting Illustrated to see awesome pics and a great story about this buck.

Congratulations Arnold and the guys at Bull Ridge Guide Service

a_bow_nut, I have recieved pics of this same buck also. In fact, I had to pull up pics of Brett's "pet" to make sure they were not the same....and they are not (THANK GOD!)

As for the statement that came with the pic (I know that you did not write this so please do not jump all over me)...cactus bucks are not eligible for Boone and Crockett OR Pope and Young so the speculation that this may be the new world record is all for not.

An AWESOME lookin' buck though!

I saw the same buck on the B&C website. Too bad it won't make the book but I don't believe anyone would ever pass on something like that. Truly amazing!

ABert, I agree. I would like to see a catergory for bucks such as this one, Black Magic, Black Magic Jr, etc.

yes their should be a catagory for these they are awsome!!! does anyone have the "official" reason their not allowed? I'm deffinatly not up on my cactus buck book rules :dumb

Killbee, I don't have a "textbook" answer although hopefully BOHNTR will respond. He's an official measurer and may be able to give us some insight.

I would ASSUME that they are not elegible because they do not shed and then regrow a new set of antlers every year. They just continue to grow, break off, and add mass as the years go by...and they never shed thier velvet.

Of course, I may be way off...just my opinion.

ah yes where is bohntr? i was wondering if it was," Correct me if i'm wrong" it would obviously go in non typical catagory, but i believe the velvet can't be on them to be officially measured, since a cactus buck is permanantly velvet what would the horn be like underneath the velvet? would you even get to a real hard horned area on it to be measured? i dont know just a guess

killerbee
does any one know what part of nevada it was killed in?

AGCHAWK
I have no idea what part of the state.

Yea, I was wonderin' the same thing. I have no idea if you can even strip the velvet without destroying the horn on a cactus buck. I know some cactus buck antlers are very fragile and some are reported to be VERY light.

The buck in the pic is a cactus buck but with a different type of growth to the antlers. You can tell that they have been broken many times during his days but they have kept the basic shape of the main frame 4X4 (If you can imagine the rack without the broken parts). At least I can see where the basic 4X4 frame WOULD be. I guess the antlers on this particular buck were VERY VERY light too.

I think cactus bucks have it worse than any other buck around. is`nt it true they are or have been castrated ?

MuleyMadness
Bottom one sorta looks like "Black Magic" only a lot uglier. :)

AGCHAWK
Brett, he sure does.

Hunterman67, you're right in MOST cases. Normally cactus bucks are "caused" by damaged testicals which in turn causes a hormonal inbalance.

Not all are though....sometimes the inbalace is caused by something else.

And the top one. WOW is all I can say, maybe the one I watched for the last two years will grow some more junk and be that big in 2007. [-o< [-o<

He looks very similar in many ways though, just not the extra tine length in cheaters, etc.

killerbee
maybe their not allowed for the simple fact that this one would be physically imposible to score!! where would you start?
17
a_bow_nut
Maybe the reason they aren't allowed is that they didn't grow all that bones on their heads in one season. Since they don't shed their antlers they can just keep growing for years and years.

Just a thought. :-k

a_bow_nut, Yes it sure does. Thanks for the photo.
