Bookcliffs Elk

Here is the pictures of my brother in-law's elk that he shot opening morning on the Bookcliffs rifle hunt last Saturday. I figured this bull might gross score between 320-330. I want to know all of your guys' opinion on this bull and whether or not you would have passed on it opening morning? He is a good bull, but for opening morning on the Bookcliffs, I would have held out.

Welcome and thanks for sharing.

Tough call on 'shoot or not', I may have held out for a bit also. But that is still a nice bull and if the hunter is happy then 2 thumbs up from me.

Sometimes points, scores, size, etc gets a little old IMO. Don't know the hunters circumstances either, I'll bet he is happy or he wouldn't have pulled the trigger. (???)

I agree, to each his own. Success to me tastes better than "Tag Soup". Like I've said before, "To each his own". I hear people tell me that they are not going to kill anything under 350 and under 30'. I guess that they don't know that the World Record Mule deer is under 30'. Anyway, good for him and congrats. Looks like the family was there also to share in his success.

From what I understand, the Bookcliffs area holds some real monsters but heck, if the hunter is happy then that is all that matters. CONGRATS to him on what I think is a fine lookin' bull too.

GUTPYLZ, I agree with ya 100% but just wanted to point something out. The Burris buck, the current #1 typical, was measured at just over 30 inches inside spread (30 7/8 I believe). The #1 non-typical, the Broder buck, only had a 22 1/4 inside spread.
Again, no worries either way...your point was well taken.

6x6 bull
It's a tough call on whether to shoot a nice bull like this or not on a premium unit. I guess it would depend on whether the hunter has killed bigger bulls and how many points it took him to draw the tag. It seems like my hunt will be a once in a lifetime, so I would hold out to make the hunt last as long as I could. I might end up shooting one the same size , but I will have spent several days enjoying the beautiful scenery.

It's easy to sit here and give advice on what to do on sombody elses hunt. If the hunter is happy then that is all that matters. My brother had a freind that pulled a Henry mountians deer tag on his first try a few years ago. The only problem was that he had one day to hunt and that was it. He made the best of his situation and got a nice deer. Was it the biggest no but he is happy with it so more power to him.

That is a beautiful elk, hunter goes home happy witha wall mounter...

those brow tines are amazing, a taxidermist is going to make that thing a piece of art. speculation is for people sitting at home wondering what others who are doing it should do... can't do that personally, I have a heck of a time not pulling the triugger on a legal bull - espcially if he had the time to see those tines in the scope, they always look bigger on the hoof than they do on the ground.
